[00:00:03] [Music]

[00:00:16] hello and welcome to this after effects

[00:00:19] certification preparation series of

[00:00:21] videos I'm Louisa Winters in this video

[00:00:24] I want to cover objective 4.4 B which is

[00:00:28] to change the speed of a video clip so

[00:00:30] we're going to talk about time remapping

[00:00:31] time remapping time stretching creating

[00:00:34] freeze frames all of that good stuff so

[00:00:37] let's get to it

[00:00:40] in After Effects go ahead and open the

[00:00:42] composition named time remapping

[00:00:45] so compositions

[00:00:47] time remapping and there you go all we

[00:00:50] have is this one clip of the city reveal

[00:00:55] right it's just a drone shot that I did

[00:00:57] in New Jersey and there you have it so

[00:01:00] the first thing is just stretch listen

[00:01:02] if you want this to play quicker make

[00:01:04] sure that you're showing the stretch

[00:01:06] column and you know make it shorter and

[00:01:09] now if you play it yeah it's going

[00:01:11] faster it's going faster if you want it

[00:01:14] to go slower then go the other way this

[00:01:17] is now going to be oh ridiculously slow

[00:01:20] slow slow slow I'm just gonna undo both

[00:01:23] of them and go back to 100 so stretch

[00:01:27] easy peasy now let's just say that I

[00:01:31] want to create a freeze frame right

[00:01:33] there

[00:01:34] layer

[00:01:36] time

[00:01:38] Freeze Frame done

[00:01:40] so it's just going to freeze the entire

[00:01:42] layer

[00:01:45] oh I don't want it to freeze the entire

[00:01:47] layer well you know you can do other

[00:01:49] things you know and so but freeze frame

[00:01:52] does that

[00:01:53] um by the way and let me revert to that

[00:01:56] um so undo Ctrl Z command Z on the Mac

[00:01:59] redo shift Ctrl Z shift command Z if you

[00:02:04] are on the Mac so undo redo and you know

[00:02:07] you could go to edit undo and redo but

[00:02:10] quite frankly yeah I mean the shortcuts

[00:02:12] are so easy and they work in every

[00:02:14] single program all right because those

[00:02:16] are operating system shortcuts anyway

[00:02:20] do you see the shape of this keyframe

[00:02:22] see how it's Square it means there is no

[00:02:25] interpolation it means that first it was

[00:02:28] a different one and now it's this one

[00:02:29] and it's doing it with time remapping

[00:02:33] that is how it's freezing the frame it's

[00:02:35] using time remapping so if you really

[00:02:37] want to freeze up frame I I wouldn't do

[00:02:40] it like this I wouldn't do it with layer

[00:02:42] time and then freeze frame I wouldn't do

[00:02:46] that

[00:02:47] if I want to freeze the last frame I

[00:02:49] guess I would do that I could do it with

[00:02:51] that but in the meantime let's just do

[00:02:54] this differently so right now let's go

[00:02:57] ahead and get rid of time remapping so

[00:02:59] that you know this is good

[00:03:02] and let's discuss time remapping

[00:03:06] right click

[00:03:08] time enable time remapping all right oh

[00:03:13] by the way time reverse the layer piece

[00:03:14] of cake right now it goes backwards

[00:03:16] [Music]

[00:03:18] time reverse and it's the same layer

[00:03:20] time

[00:03:22] time reverse

[00:03:24] you could also time stretch it this is

[00:03:27] kind of the same as stretching it here

[00:03:28] in the timeline so

[00:03:30] right same difference so anyway I'm

[00:03:33] going to undo that time reverse so that

[00:03:36] it goes straight there you go so layer

[00:03:40] time

[00:03:41] enable time remapping and then you see

[00:03:44] the time remapping in the timeline with

[00:03:46] already two keyframes

[00:03:49] notice that there are

[00:03:52] time code numbers here time code numbers

[00:03:56] here these time code numbers agree with

[00:03:59] the time code numbers of the clip

[00:04:04] of the clip to make this easier let me

[00:04:09] create actually do it with me let's

[00:04:11] create a new composition

[00:04:13] with the city reveal so drag it to the

[00:04:17] new hump icon at the bottom of the

[00:04:20] project panel and now do you see how the

[00:04:23] beginning of the composition has that

[00:04:25] the same time code number as the

[00:04:27] beginning of the clip

[00:04:28] right click the clip time enable time

[00:04:31] remapping and now you're going to see

[00:04:34] that you see the same type code numbers

[00:04:37] here in the composition and here in the

[00:04:40] time remap

[00:04:41] and you're going to see the 10 the same

[00:04:43] time code numbers everywhere

[00:04:48] here's where the fun part begins you

[00:04:50] don't have to you don't have to say you

[00:04:53] want a freeze frame between the

[00:04:56] beginning and five seconds

[00:04:59] easy you don't even have to calculate so

[00:05:02] click here plus five zero zero boom it

[00:05:05] moves the playhead

[00:05:07] you can add the keyframe right there but

[00:05:09] I'm not just going to add it well yeah

[00:05:11] why not

[00:05:12] you can copy the values do you see how

[00:05:16] this value here is like 454 copy it and

[00:05:20] this one here is like 459 paste this is

[00:05:24] now a freeze frame 454.

[00:05:33] there you go

[00:05:36] oh oh it's not working

[00:05:42] copy paste

[00:05:45] it's not working copying the value so

[00:05:48] you know my After Effects is misbehaving

[00:05:50] but I can copy the keyframe okay so

[00:05:53] let's do it differently so from the

[00:05:55] beginning hey you know what sometimes

[00:05:58] stuff happens and you just have to go a

[00:06:00] different way

[00:06:01] plus five

[00:06:03] five zero zero there you go copy the

[00:06:06] keyframe click on the keyframe and copy

[00:06:08] it Ctrl C

[00:06:10] and then the playhead is already where

[00:06:12] you need it to be pasted Ctrl V well

[00:06:15] select the layer and now that's a freeze

[00:06:18] frame in between the two because they

[00:06:20] have the same time code number so the

[00:06:22] time code number is not moving between

[00:06:24] these two keyframes

[00:06:28] is a freeze frame and that's how I would

[00:06:30] do a free stream because then it

[00:06:32] continues

[00:06:33] now between here and here is going

[00:06:37] faster because now I have a shorter

[00:06:39] amount of time to go from this time code

[00:06:42] number to the end time code number and

[00:06:45] the end time code number agrees with

[00:06:48] what I have in the composition

[00:06:50] but now this is going faster

[00:06:54] all right

[00:06:56] now if I delete that and I want for my

[00:06:59] clip to play Backwards I can just

[00:07:01] exchange the two keyframes right

[00:07:05] and there you go

[00:07:07] now my clip plays backwards but it all

[00:07:10] has to do with these keyframes see it so

[00:07:13] the keyframes by default agree with the

[00:07:16] time code of the clip but they don't

[00:07:19] have to so say uh here at this point in

[00:07:23] time I want to freeze frame that clip

[00:07:27] keyframe it move in time I'm not going

[00:07:30] to make the same mistake again I'm going

[00:07:31] to copy the keyframe copy and I'm going

[00:07:33] to paste it right here that's a freeze

[00:07:36] frame in between those two

[00:07:39] and that's how you use time remapping

[00:07:42] alrighty so keeping on going

[00:07:46] you can absolutely change the speed of a

[00:07:49] clip not just by using the time stretch

[00:07:54] and by the way see how we don't see it

[00:07:55] in here right click column go to stretch

[00:07:59] and now you see it right so I'm going to

[00:08:01] delete the time remap because you know

[00:08:03] we don't need it so I can change this to

[00:08:05] go slower by increasing the percentage

[00:08:09] numbers to go faster by decreasing right

[00:08:13] so let me just uh let me take it to I

[00:08:17] don't know

[00:08:18] 30.

[00:08:20] 32 so now it goes like three times

[00:08:22] faster right and that's pretty cool

[00:08:27] I can also do that using time remapping

[00:08:30] so I'm going to type 100 here again

[00:08:33] right click the clip go to time enable

[00:08:36] time remapping and the beginning and the

[00:08:39] end have the time code numbers that

[00:08:42] agree with a clip

[00:08:43] all I have to do is move this one here

[00:08:46] and now it's going faster and then it's

[00:08:49] going to end with a freeze frame

[00:08:51] boom

[00:08:54] making sense

[00:08:56] so time remapping really becomes a way

[00:09:00] for you to time everything exactly the

[00:09:03] way that you want to time it say I want

[00:09:06] to use uh another clip I'm going to use

[00:09:09] the pen Hot Springs right and I'm going

[00:09:13] to enable the time remapping so layer

[00:09:16] time enable time remapping

[00:09:20] and I want say for this Frame exactly to

[00:09:25] go with music and I'm going to go to say

[00:09:29] winter

[00:09:30] right

[00:09:31] I'm going to play this

[00:09:40] [Applause]

[00:09:42] and maybe there exactly there right so I

[00:09:46] can put a marker we already know that we

[00:09:49] can add markers by dragging them from

[00:09:51] here I'm going to put a marker in the

[00:09:52] timeline right there I could have added

[00:09:55] a marker in the layer I could go layer

[00:09:58] marker

[00:10:00] add marker so either way right we did

[00:10:04] that in an earlier movie but it doesn't

[00:10:05] matter say I won for this Frame to go

[00:10:08] there well I have time remapping so I'm

[00:10:11] going to click a keyframe that and now

[00:10:14] I can move that as I press the shift key

[00:10:17] it snaps to the marker and I got it that

[00:10:20] frame goes exactly where I want it uh

[00:10:23] did it need to change the timing of the

[00:10:26] other clip of the of the other frames

[00:10:28] yeah of course it did if you wanted to

[00:10:31] change less then keyframe it differently

[00:10:34] right so you can instead of keep framing

[00:10:37] it there I could keyframe it say right

[00:10:39] here

[00:10:41] and now this is like normal speed

[00:10:44] and now say I want this Frame to be

[00:10:48] exactly where I put the marker keyframe

[00:10:51] that and then move only that and now yes

[00:10:55] it goes a little bit faster in between

[00:10:56] these two but at least it didn't change

[00:10:59] the timing of the entire clip so you are

[00:11:02] in charge on how everything interpolates

[00:11:05] everything everything how the speed

[00:11:08] changes happen all of those things so

[00:11:11] you are in charge of that all right so

[00:11:14] I think that was it for time remapping

[00:11:16] just remember to keyframe and move the

[00:11:18] keyframes as you needed and don't forget

[00:11:21] the menus so layer

[00:11:23] time

[00:11:25] you can time reverse Time Stretch Freeze

[00:11:28] Frame and freeze on the last frame don't

[00:11:30] forget these things in case there are

[00:11:33] questions about it I would always go to

[00:11:35] layer time and see if you can do

[00:11:37] something a little bit easier than using

[00:11:39] time remapping but if you need to use

[00:11:41] time remapping you can enable it and now

[00:11:44] you know how it works

[00:11:45] all right so this brings us to the end

[00:11:49] of this video thank you for watching and

[00:11:51] I'll see you on the next video

[00:11:53] [Music]

[00:12:03] thank you
